A Piece of My Heart 1997
by Shirley Lauro
Directed by Emilyn Jones
Director Note

I floated into this project unconscious of the effects of the Vietnam War on society. Sure, I had seen the movies, read the books, but A Piece of My Heart is different. I have gained a new understanding of a war, that is to many, an unpopular memory of a country in turmoil. In our rehearsals, I would watch my talented cast bring feeling and mortality to the stories of their characters. They brought this play to life, revealing a period of our country's history that lay hidden to me until now. Granted, A Piece of My Heart is a play, written to entertain an audience, but even more important, A Piece of My Heart informs, leaving a message implanted in the soul.
