The Actor's Nightmare/The Real Inspector Hound 1992
by Tom Stoppard and Christopher Durang
Directed by William Myatt
Directors Note

In a column by Erma Bombeck entitled "Murphy Brown Should Make Us Laugh, Not Shout," the difference between reality and fiction is discussed. Ms. Bombeck writes: "It seems to be getting tougher and tougher to for viewers to keep fiction and reality from crashing head on...Take sitcoms for what they are--an oasis of laughter that serves as an antidote to all the reality of the six and ten o'clock news." I do not believe Ms. Bombeck would care for our fall play double bill. Both of these shows are set in a theatre and in both of them members of the "audience" cross the boundary from their "reality" into the "fictional" world of the theatre. This movement from fiction to reality (or reality to fiction) proves to be quite dangerous for a number of characters. Although these two shows are quite witty and humorous, I think they ask us to appreciate the positives and negatives we face in life with a hopeful attitude and joyful outlook.
