A Boy. A Girl. A Man-eating plant bent on world domination. Sounds like my kind of show! As a child growing up in Maquoketa, my friends and I would string extension cables to my garage attic or my friend’s camper in his backyard and watch The Acri Creature Feature every weekend. The bad movies with cheesy character hosts serve as inspiration for me in many shows, but certainly none more than Little Shop. With the source of this musical being a really not very good movie starring a young Jack Nicholson, it could have fit right in on The Creature Feature. It has been fun working on this show with a great group of students. (I hope their brains haven’t turned into tasty, toxic goo!) Little Shop of Horrors offers us a chance to explore a different type of musical theatre than we have in the past. Chicago was a jazzy, Fosse-filled wonderful show. Seussical was a bit more modern sounding, but traditional in its organization. Sugar and Anything Goes were both in the style of a traditional, large scale Broadway musical. Little Shop, with basically a unit set and a score that Phil Spector could have produced a “Wall of Sound” around, is definitely a change of style. Finally, we are performing Little Shop as the closing performance of The Iowa Thespian Festival at The Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center on the campus of The University of Northern Iowa a week after performing it at PV. This has been a learning experience for all of us from production staff to students to parents. It is a phenomenal opportunity that we are honored to have. I would like to thank all of the PV parents who made the trip, the Drama Boosters, Mr. Mike Bawden for his help with publicity, and Mr. Jason Fah for donating the trucks required to move the set, props, costumes, and Audrey II. We hope you enjoy the show and remember, “Don’t Feed the Plants!”
Synopsis

A down-and-out skid row floral assistant becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon Audrey II grows into an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed, R&Bsinging carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite, finally revealing itself to be an alien creature poised for global domination! One of the longest-running Off-Broadway shows of all time, this affectionate spoof of 1950’s sci-fi movies has become a house-hold name, thanks to a highly successful film version and a score by the songwriting team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, who redefined the animated musical film with Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Beauty And The Beast and Aladdin. Charming, tuneful and hilarious, with tongue firmly planted in cheek, Little Shop Of Horrors never fails to entertain.
