"Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in our hearts." - Winnie the Pooh, A.A. Milne
No day is ordinary. In each day, there is something unique and special that happens and that will never occur again. But how often do we stop to realize those things- a glance, a laugh, a new found treasure, a breathtaking moment? Our lives are filled with running and doing and we take for granted the everyday happenings of life. Thornton Wilder reminds us that the very things we take for granted can be taken away in the blink of an eye. That "tomorrow" is a fleeting thing that is not promised. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I stepped back and realized how much I "missed" every day. Throughout treatment those little things- my children's laughter, a hug from my husband, a smile from a friend- became the things that lifted me up when I was unsure that I could make it through the day. Ordinary became extraordinary, life giving moments that I treasure to this day as I celebrate 16 years of survivorship. I saw this again during the quarantine for COVID. Days became monotonous and sometimes I had to check a calendar to know what day it was. It was easy to focus on the negatives. However, while I never hope to live through a pandemic of this magnitude again, the time became very precious for me. Our little family was all together every day - an occurrence which will probably never happen again. With one graduating from college this year and one attending college in New York, our family time has changed and become less frequent. That moment in time is one for which I am forever be grateful. So what about today stands out for you? What moment will you hold on to? Don’t miss the chance to say the words, to dance in the kitchen, to call/text, to breathe and be thankful.
